Guide by Mr.Dino
Discord Profile in case you need to contact me.
On this guide we will cover how to connect and control
the fixtures (lights) from the Theatrical Mod and
Extended Lights Mod for Minecraft 1.20.1 through
ArtNet protocol using external software.
We will cover the following program: MagicQ OnPc.
https://chamsyslighting.com/software/magicq-downloads/
Latest available version: MagicQ PC Version 1.9.6.5
It is possible that when opening for the first time it will open some faders, to get to see the complete program, go to “Panel” > “Full”.
Or click on “Full” at Top Right.
If it asks you to select programming mode is mostly up to you, I recommend using “Live (Chase)”.
Inside the program go to Setup and then to Network.
Double click on your IP address, the first parameter from the list.
The following menu will pop up (probably a different IP), click again on the IP shown to set.
Remember that IP Address as you will need it later.
Now we are going to setup your ArtNet Communication Type.
Double Click on “Art-Net type” and a menu will pop up.
Select V4 Unicast, as this is the communication protocol we want to use, you could use others for different thing but you need some extra knowledge there hehehehe.
Now we are going to setup the correct ports to ArtNet (You could also use an already port and Universe set by ArtNet on the Default config).
For this, go to “VIEW DMX I/O”.
We need to set up the first line as on the example picture.
Uni 1, we have to make sure that “Status” is ENABLED.
The “Out type” is set to Art-Net.
And that the “Out uni” is set to ART 1 (for outputting Universe 1).
There is no need to setup the “In” section if you´re not going to receive ArtNet, but if you´re going to, just repeat the previous steps with the “In” section.
If you want more than 1 ArtNet Universe, repeat the same ArtNet setup with Uni 2, make sure no ArtNet Universes collide with each other.
It should look like this if you want 6 Universes for example.
Inside your Minecraft world…
First we need a Network: I recommend creating one instead of using the default one.
We can do this with the following command:
/theatrical network new PUBLIC (name)
In my case my network will be called ArtNet.
After creating your network, hit ESC and go to OPTIONS > “ArtNet Config”.
The following menu should appear.
Click on “Add”
This will create a Universe: 1 category.
Now we need to import our data…
Setup the IP Address from the dot2 onPC.
Make sure that “Network Universe” is set to 1 and ENABLED.
Set the “DMX Universe” to 1.
And bottom right, where it says “Unknown” set it to your newly created Network.
It should look like my example:
Finally click on “SAVE”.
To make sure the connection has been made correctly go back into “ArtNet Config”.
If at Top Right it says “Data received 0 second(s) ago” that means the connection has been established and there is no loss.
If the number goes up and resets back to 0 that means you have established a link but signal has some losses, this could affect on delays from MagicQ onPC to your light fixtures.
If the number keeps going up, that means you have lost connection. Go back and retry from the beginning.
To finally make sure everything works, we are going to test the fixtures.
To address the fixtures in our game we can use the “Configuration Card”, to use: Shift + Right Click and the menu will open.
Setup as however you like for your project but make sure you added your correct Universe, selected the right network and assigned a DMX Address.
If you want to setup several light “Address Auto Increment” is highly recommended.
After configuring the “Configuration Card”, Right Click a Fixture with it.
There should appear a chat message confirming the addressing.
Download the correct Fixture file to ensure the patching works correctly.
All Moving Heads from the Mod up to today (05/05/2025) uses the same Patch file.
We are going to Import the Moving Head Fixture File for the example.
Open your computer file directory and go to the following directory:
C:\Users\(your user)\Documents\MagicQ\show\heads
Insert the Fixture file here.
Now go to your MagicQ PC Software and click on “PTCH”.
Inside this menu go to “CHOOSE HEAD”.
Search for “MrDino”, you can also search for it on the search tab.
When found click it.
That will open the next menu, choose the light fixture that you want to Patch.
That will bring us back to the patch menu and it will look like we did not selected our light fixture, but we did.
Now we have to “PATCH IT”.
This will open the fixture patch panel.
Here we will tell the program how many lights we want to patch, the universe and the starting DMX channel address.
As on my example I am patching 3 light fixtures @ Universe 1 starting on Address 001.
Then click on “ENTER”.
As this will be your first patch, click on “YES”.
Your patch panel should look something like mine:
You can now exit that menu by clicking on the X Top Right.
As soon as you exited the previous menu you will find the following.
Your patched fixtures grouped top left.
We can also view them on “VIEW HEADS”.
Select the lighting fixtures Individually or select the entire group.
As soon as you have the lighting fixtures selected, on the numpad bottom right, click on “@” and then “FULL” and finally hit “ENTER” on your keyboard.
That will highlight the fixtures in-game.
If you have any questions let me know through Discord.
Here I will leave you some interesting and useful YouTube Tutorials.
